Two five day icon painting courses have been scheduled with professional icon painter Peter Murphy in St Peter’s Church Canterbury for 2023. Each course will have a choice of specific classic Byzantine, or Romanesque icon as its subject, and over the course of the week students will learn to gild and paint on a specially prepared wooden panel using traditional medieval techniques and materials. This will include ‘water gilding’, with 24 ct loose gold leaf over clay bole for backgrounds and halos, and how to use egg tempera paint made fresh each day from free range egg yolks and natural pigments, to model robes, figures etc

 The course takes place in the prayerful and meditative atmosphere of the nave of one of the oldest and most beautiful churches in Canterbury.

One week courses at St Peter's Canterbury in 2023

Course 1  Byzantine icon of Christ Pantocrator in the Cretan Style.

Monday 7th to Friday 11th August.

Course 2  A special ‘Gilding Masterclass’ covering all aspects of traditional water gilding used in Byzantine and Early Italian panel painting.

Monday 11th to Friday 15th of September.

All Materials including gold leaf and pigments are included in the £350 course fee.
